Cloud platforms — AWS, Google Cloud, Azure, and smaller providers like DigitalOcean or Vultr — separate compute, storage, and bandwidth into billed-separately resources that can scale automatically based on demand. This is the most flexible option and, for spiky or fast-growing traffic, often the most cost-effective one too, since you're not paying around the clock for capacity you only need for a few hours a day. The trade-off is complexity: cloud billing has more moving parts, and a misconfigured auto-scaling rule can produce a surprising invoice if nobody's watching.

A Quick Way to Decide

  1. Run your current traffic numbers through a bandwidth and RAM calculator to see where you actually stand today.
  2. If your recommended RAM comfortably fits a Starter tier, shared hosting is still fine.
  3. If you land in the Business tier with steady, predictable traffic, a VPS usually offers the best price-to-performance ratio.
  4. If your traffic is spiky, seasonal, or growing fast, cloud hosting's elasticity is worth the added billing complexity.
